22 July
Drove to
Kings Canyon via the 145 km Mereenie Loop which began with a bitumen section.
Many of the trees were Desert Oaks (casuarinas). Juvenile trees are known as feather dusters. |
Corrugations or a rock caused our brake cable on the trailer to snap. |
Some bitumen again on the snaky section |
700m elevation; 90 km to Kings Canyon |
Arrived there around 1:30 and had a good campsite with a great view over the countryside.
Drove to the Canyon after setting up camp |
We had plenty of time to do the easy Creek Walk of 1 hour.
Impressive walks entrance with great fresh water taps | | |
Find the Zebra Finch |
View from the end of walk |
Went to the Thirsty Dingo Bar for a Screaming Galah pizza (chicken and chili) and a pot of Lazy Yak Pale Ale. There were other more upmarket dining opportunities but this satisfied us and was very comfortable with old leather lounges and an outlook on diners outdoors. Being warm is increasingly important.
Sunday 23 July
Before leaving this impressive area, we walked 2.5 hours on the Southern Rim Walk. It was well graded with spectacular sights. MANY foreign tourists, mostly Asian or German and all young. In fact, an Australian woman asked us our age and decided that perhaps her 70 year old mother might do the walk.
One-way gate - end of our walk |
Start of 4-hour loop walk which looked too hard for me |
Garden of Eden, part of the hard walk |
Cute dragon |
The temp was 25 degrees when we exited the walk at 12:30 by turnstile, hot enough for the authorities to lock the entrance gate. Drove on to Yulara.
